Before the game starts, one Queen is secretly removed from the deck, leaving three Queens. Since cards are matched in pairs, one Queen will always be left over — and whoever is holding it at the end of the game loses. That lone unmatched Queen is the Old Maid. The whole game is about pairing up your cards as fast as possible and hoping you’re not the one stuck holding her.

What You Need

One standard deck of 52 playing cards with exactly ONE Queen removed — it doesn’t matter which Queen, but make sure only one is taken out, leaving exactly three Queens in the deck

Two to eight players

Understanding Why This Works

A normal deck has 26 pairs of matching cards (two black 6s, two red 6s = two pairs, for example). When you remove one Queen, you have 51 cards and 25 complete pairs — plus one lone Queen that can never be matched. That Queen is the Old Maid.

Setting Up the Game

Remove exactly one Queen from the deck and set it completely aside, face-down and out of view. You won’t need it again.

Shuffle the remaining 51 cards thoroughly.

Deal ALL of the cards out to players one at a time, going around the table. Some players may end up with one extra card — that is completely fine and normal.

Players pick up their cards and look at them without showing anyone else.

Sorting Your Hand Before Play Begins

Before the first turn, every player goes through their own cards and removes any pairs they already have. A pair is two cards of the same rank AND same color — for example, the 4 of Spades and 4 of Clubs are both black 4s, so they make a pair. The 4 of Hearts and 4 of Diamonds are both red 4s, so they also make a pair. When you find a pair, place both cards face-down in a discard pile in front of you — they’re out of the game. Keep going until you have no more pairs in your hand.

Important: two red Queens pair together, and two black Queens pair together. The one Queen of whatever color you removed means one Queen is left that cannot be paired.

How to Play — Step by Step

The player to the dealer’s left goes first.

That player fans out their cards and holds them face-down in front of them — spread like a fan so the person to their RIGHT can see the backs of the cards but not the faces.

The player to the RIGHT reaches over and randomly pulls one card out of that fan without looking at the face.

The player who just drew the card looks at it privately. If it makes a pair with any card already in their hand, they place that pair face-down in their discard pile. If it doesn’t make a pair, they simply add it to their hand.

Now it is THAT player’s turn. They fan out their cards and hold them toward the person to THEIR right, who draws one card.

Play continues clockwise around the table — each player draws from the person to their left, checks for pairs, and then holds their hand out for the person to their right to draw from.

As Players Run Out of Cards

As the game goes on, players will successfully pair up and discard all their cards. When a player has no cards left in their hand, they are safe — they are out of the game in a good way. They don’t draw, don’t hold out their hand, and just watch the rest of the game.

Winning and Losing

The game continues until only one player is left holding cards. That player will be holding exactly one card — the Old Maid — and they lose. Everyone else wins.

Strategy and Tips

When you’re holding the Old Maid and fanning your cards for someone to draw, mix it into the middle of your hand rather than keeping it at an edge — edge cards are easier to notice.

Watch other players’ reactions when they draw a card. A disappointed face or a groan often means they drew the Old Maid.

When drawing from someone else’s hand, try to vary where you pull from — if someone seems nervous about one particular card, consider avoiding it strategically.

▶ Search How to Play on YouTube

What Is Old Maid?
