Canasta (Classic)
What Is Classic Canasta?
Classic Canasta refers to the original Uruguayan rules from the 1940s before the game was simplified for international audiences. It plays the same as standard Canasta in most ways — build melds, complete canastas, go out — but with higher opening meld requirements that change depending on your team’s current score, and a special bonus for going out with a concealed hand. If you have already learned standard Canasta, the differences are small but strategically significant.
What You Need
- Two standard 52-card decks plus all four Jokers shuffled together — 108 cards total
- Four players in two partnerships — partners sit across from each other
- Score pad
How Classic Canasta Differs From Modern Canasta
Opening Meld Requirements Based on Score
In Classic Canasta, the minimum point value required for a team’s first meld of the game depends on that team’s current score:
- Team score below 0: any meld of any value qualifies
- Team score 0 to 1,499: first meld must total at least 50 points
- Team score 1,500 to 2,999: first meld must total at least 90 points
- Team score 3,000 or more: first meld must total at least 120 points
This means leading teams face a higher bar to start melding each hand — a built-in catch-up mechanic.
Going Out Cleanly — Requires Two Canastas
In Classic rules, going out without discarding (going out cleanly, by melding your last card directly) requires your team to have completed TWO canastas. Going out normally — by discarding your last card — still requires only one canasta.
Concealed Hand Bonus
If a player goes out having never previously laid any cards on the table — meaning they meld their entire hand in one single turn and then discard — they earn a Concealed Hand bonus of 100 extra points on top of the standard going out bonus.
Everything Else — Same as Standard Canasta
All other rules are identical to standard Canasta: draw two cards per turn, wild cards (Jokers and 2s) substitute in melds, Red 3s go directly to the table for bonus points, Black 3s block the discard pile, canastas of seven cards earn 300 or 500 bonus points, and the discard pile can be taken under the right conditions.
Scoring
- Going out bonus: 100 points
- Going out cleanly (no discard): 200 points
- Concealed Hand: additional 100 points
- Natural canasta: 500 points each
- Mixed canasta: 300 points each
- Red 3s: 100 points each (all four = 800)
- Each melded card: face value
Winning
First team to reach 5,000 points wins.
Tips for New Players
- Track your team’s score carefully — the opening meld requirement changes as you accumulate points, and being locked out of melding early in a hand can cost you significantly.
- Plan for the Concealed Hand bonus when your cards align perfectly — holding everything and going out in one turn is exciting and worth the extra 100 points.
- The two-canasta requirement for going out cleanly encourages teams to build more canastas rather than going out quickly with just one.
