What Is Crazy Pineapple?

Crazy Pineapple plays exactly like Texas Hold’em — blinds, flop, turn, river, and showdown — with one exciting twist. Each player starts with THREE hole cards instead of two. After the flop is dealt and a betting round happens, each player must discard one of their three hole cards face-down. Play then continues normally with two hole cards. The extra starting card gives you more possibilities pre-flop and makes the discard decision genuinely interesting — you get to see the flop before deciding which card to give up.

What You Need

  • One standard deck of 52 playing cards
  • Two to ten players
  • Poker chips

Setting Up the Game

  1. Post blinds — small blind left of dealer, big blind next.
  2. Deal THREE cards face-down to each player. Players look at their three hole cards.

How to Play — Step by Step

Pre-Flop Betting

Starting left of the big blind, each player folds, calls, or raises — same as Hold’em. Players evaluate their three-card starting hand.

The Flop

Dealer burns one card and deals three community cards face-up. A betting round happens — check, bet, call, raise, or fold. After betting is complete, each player must discard exactly one of their three hole cards face-down. You now hold two hole cards.

The Turn

Dealer burns one card and deals one more community card face-up — four showing. Another betting round.

The River

Dealer burns one card and deals the fifth and final community card face-up. Final betting round.

The Showdown

Players reveal their two hole cards. Each player makes their best five-card hand using any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards — same as Hold’em. Best hand wins.

The Critical Discard Decision

The discard after the flop is the most important decision in Crazy Pineapple. By this point you have seen the flop — you know which of your three hole cards connects best with the board. Common considerations:

  • Keep the two cards that connect best with the flop — pairs, draws to straights or flushes.
  • Discard the card that is completely disconnected and offers no future value.
  • If you have a made hand already (like two pair using two of your three hole cards), keep both cards that make it.

Winning

Best five-card hand at showdown wins the pot.

Tips for New Players

  • Suited connectors — two cards of the same suit in sequence like 8♥9♥ — are especially powerful in Crazy Pineapple because starting with three cards makes it more likely you hold them.
  • Don’t fall in love with a hand pre-flop — you still have to discard after the flop, and sometimes your best three-card hand becomes mediocre once the board changes the picture.
  • The discard is public — everyone sees that you discarded. Use that information about what opponents kept and what they gave up.
